Sato Koichi+Umezawa Hideki

Sato Koichi

Born in 1990 in Tokyo. Graduated with an MFA in Inter-Media Art from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2019. Currently based in Tokyo. Sato’s practice is grounded in research and fieldwork, examining how industrial and consumer societies, and the desires that underlie them, have treated non-human entities such as natural environments and living organisms. Working primarily with moving images, he creates installations that also incorporate immaterial elements such as sound and scent.

His recent exhibitions include “L’Écologie des choses” (Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, 2025), “DANCING WITH ALL: The Ecology of Empathy” (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, 2024), and "ATAMI ART GRANT 2024" (Various locations throughout Atami City, Shizuoka, 2024).

He participated in the “OPEN SITE 9: KANTO (SATO Koichi + ARCHIVE) Water Museum” (Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo, 2025), Tokyo Artist Accelerator Program [TAAP] (Arts Council Tokyo, 2024), and received the International Project Support (Arts Council Tokyo, 2021).

Umezawa Hideki

Born in 1986 in Gunma Prefecture. Graduated with an MFA in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2019. Currently based in Tokyo and Paris. His interest lies in the preverbal sensations perceived within the environment or the complexity of natural phenomena. He thus conducts fieldwork and research around the world, collecting sounds and images to create installations composed of various media.

His recent exhibitions include “L’Écologie des relations - a Forêt amante de la mer” (Frac Sud - Cité de l’ art contemporain, Marseille, 2026), “L’Écologie des choses” (Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, 2025), and “DANCING WITH ALL: The Ecology of Empathy” (21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, 2024).

He received the International Project Support (Arts Council Tokyo, 2021).
