Takeoka Yuji

Born in Kyoto in 1946 and lives and works in Dusseldorf. Takeoka has a strong interest in forms relating to contemporary ways of exhibiting art, and his themes range from creating “things” to “showing things.” Treating the pedestal itself as a sculpture, he creates works that give rise to fresh perceptions and meanings through spatial presentation that reveals the work by stripping away extraneous elements.
Major exhibitions include From a Pedestal into Space (National Museum of Art, Osaka, 2016 and the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama and Toyama Memorial Museum, Saitama, 2016), and Nullpunkt der Bildhauerei/Sculpture at Square Zero, Gerhard Marcks Haus, Bremen, Germany, 2012), Yuji Takeoka: Museo (Josef Albers Museum, Bottrop, Germany, 2011), and Documenta 9 (Kassel, Germany, 1992).
