Overview
Daiba, originally constructed as a battery array to intercept the Black Ships during the Bakumatsu period, is an artificial island with a history of seeing Japan open to the world without ever firing a single shell. The venue, where the former battery site has been turned into a park, is a rustic space dotted with historical ruins among grasses and shrubs, creating a unique atmosphere where nature and history coexist. In contrast, the adjacent Odaiba Marine Park features an artificial sandy beach, offering a dynamic and expansive landscape opening toward the sea.
In these areas, site-specific works that utilize the environment will be installed, including Yayoi Kusama's Narcissus Garden (1966/2026), Zhao Yao's Something in the Air (2019), and sound installation works by Kenta Ishige. By strolling, stopping, and looking back, visitors will experience the relationship between the artworks and the site itself—an experience distinct from that of an art museum. This will undoubtedly serve as an opportunity to rediscover the charm of the city of Tokyo.
This is an interactive program where participants walk through the Odaiba area, which serves as the exhibition space, while sharing its historical background and memories of the land. We invite you to deeply contemplate the relationship between the history of this site and the artworks, while enjoying a multi-dimensional viewing experience enriched by conversations with the guide and fellow participants.
