Yamada Yutaro
Designer
Born in 1992 in Hokkaido Prefecture. He received his master’s degree from the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018. The same year, he joined centre Inc. with Yoshihisa Tanaka as his mentor, and he became freelance in 2024. His practice ranges from the development of visual identity for cultural establishments or exhibitions to graphic design for publications. He also develops a range of works that references the medium’s materiality by incorporating painterly elements such as frottages of varying locations or of his own brushstrokes.
He participated in START Box (Arts Council Tokyo, 2023).
Visual Concept
The visual concept of this exhibition was developed to reflect the spatial layout embodying the idea of Coordinates. The scattering of different design elements--such as the title, artworks, or exhibition information--aims to construct a relationship of self-standing “coordinates” within a single space. It is thus a constellation of the current positions of artists, curators, and art managers, once supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, developing each their own work in a wide-ranging field. The pale blue background stands as the coordinate plane, where all practices and perspectives cross paths. By allowing for a state of freedom where information can disperse and rearrange, the exhibition encourages the viewers to discover a new map, unhinged by fixed meanings or hierarchy. The visual identity attempts to reframe the various practices nurtured by the support programs in one coordinate system and to envision the dynamic reactions and relations such support can bear.
